Slope Hound is a reader-facing publication about skiing, snowboarding, and cold-weather gear. This page explains what happens to data when you visit the site. The short version: we do not run accounts, ask for personal details, sell data, or track you across other websites, and the only cookies we use are analytics cookies that load solely after you agree to them.

What we collect

We do not ask you to create an account, sign up, or submit personal information to read anything here. We do not run a newsletter or ads. The only data collected is aggregate website analytics, and only if you consent (see below).

If you email us, we receive whatever you put in that email. We use it to reply and to act on the message (for example, to make a correction), and nothing else.

Analytics and cookies

We use StatCounter to understand how the site is used, for example which articles are read and where visitors arrive from. StatCounter sets a cookie and records aggregate, non-identifying data such as pages viewed, the referring site, approximate location derived from your IP address, and your browser and device type. We use this only to improve the site. We do not use it to identify individual readers.

These analytics cookies load only after you click "Accept" on the cookie banner. Until then, StatCounter does not load and no analytics cookie is set. If you decline, nothing loads and nothing is stored beyond a small record of your choice. You can change your mind at any time using the Cookie settings link in the footer.

To remember your consent choice, we store a single value (sh_consent) in your browser's local storage. This is a functional preference, not a tracking cookie, and it never leaves your device.

Hosting, fonts, and images

The site is hosted on Cloudflare Pages. Like any web host, Cloudflare processes the requests that reach the site, including your IP address, to serve pages and protect against abuse. This is a normal part of delivering a website and is not used to profile you.

We load display and body fonts from Google Fonts, which means your browser requests those font files from Google's servers when a page loads. All article and gear photography is downloaded and served from our own site, so viewing an image does not send a request to any third-party image host.

Your choices and rights

Because we do not build reader profiles or hold personal information that identifies you, there is very little of "your data" to act on. You can still:

  • Decline analytics, or withdraw consent later, using Cookie settings in the footer.
  • Clear cookies and local storage in your browser at any time.
  • Email us with any privacy question or request.

Depending on where you live, you may have rights under laws such as the GDPR (EU/UK) or the CCPA (California) to access, correct, or delete personal data a business holds about you. If you believe we hold any such data about you, contact us and we will help.

Children

Slope Hound is a general-audience publication and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, we will update the date at the top of the page. Material changes to how data is handled will be reflected here before they take effect.
